I am appalled by the reckless behavior of the rioters in our nation’s capital and the stoking of the flames of racism and mistrust in our democratic processes. This has been an unprecedented time in the civic life of our nation. Disruption cannot have the last word on the strength of our democratic republic, and I have confidence that the will of the people will prevail.
Today’s mob violence was an attempt to undermine the democratic process. Free speech is a cornerstone of our democracy, while violence and rioting are an abuse of the protections and rights afforded by our First Amendment. As a university, our mission and values both support and are made possible by our strong democracy and First Amendment rights.
Such an egregious attack on our democratic values no doubt stirs strong emotions in all of us, myself included. I encourage you to find safe psychological spaces, and if you need support, please reach out to our many campus resources. Staff with Counseling and Psychological Services, the Dean of Students Office, resource centers and all of our student-facing offices are here to help you. For staff and faculty, the Employee Assistance Program is available and the additional sessions provided during the pandemic remain in effect.
