Selfie contest supports the 2020 Census

Census selfies with Banana Slug

It’s vital that everyone in our campus community is counted as part of the 2020 Census. Here’s why:

  • Responses help determine federal funding to UC Santa Cruz including Pell Grants, health services and certain programs in the sciences.
  • For the greater community, the results guide annual spending by the government on hospitals, schools, emergency services, roads, wildlife protection, the arts, and much more.

To generate more awareness on the importance of completing the census form, campus has launched the first-ever Slugs for Census Selfie Contest. Banana Slugs who show their support for the 2020 Census, selfie-style, will have a chance to win one of five $50 Bookshop Santa Cruz Gift Cards. Here’s how to enter:

  • Snap a selfie showing your support for the 2020 Census and share it on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using the #SlugsForCensus hashtag.
  • Entries will be accepted through Aug. 24.
  • Five winners will be randomly selected.
  • Complete contest details can be found online.

The deadline for filling out the Census is Sept. 30. Get started by visiting www.my2020census.gov. With only nine questions, it takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Remember, when it asks for your place of residence, use the address you were living at in Santa Cruz before you left due to COVID-19. It is where you live the majority of the year, even if you aren’t living here right now due to the pandemic. Even if you believe you already have been counted at home by your parents, you should fill out the form on your own if you lived in Santa Cruz before moving as a result of COVID-19.

Your response will help support UCSC and the greater Santa Cruz community for the next 10 years. Learn more about the Census at 2020census.gov
