In Memoriam: Michael William Murphy, Lick Observatory

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Kostas Chloros, Superintendent, and Joseph Halay, Facilities Supervisor, Lick Observatory

Dear Members of the UC Observatories and Lick Observatory Communities:

It is with deep sadness that we write to share the news that Michael William Murphy, a Senior Building Maintenance Worker at Lick Observatory, died Tuesday, November 5.

Michael was a dedicated employee who prided himself on preserving and restoring the grounds and buildings at Lick Observatory. Michael grew up in Superior, Wisconsin. He loved the outdoors, going fishing on the Brule River, and deer hunting in Barnes. The fact that he loved the outdoors speaks volumes as to why he ultimately ended up at Lick Observatory with its incredible views of the Diablo Mountain Range and the Santa Clara Valley.

We know that sad and shocking news can be difficult to process and encourage Faculty and Staff to call the Employee Assistance Program at (831) 459–3573 if needed.
