Exceptions to campus closure

As in the past, the UC Santa Cruz campus will close during the holiday season in an effort to conserve energy at a time when the university business is generally slow. This year the campus will be closed from Tuesday, December 24, 2019 through Wednesday, January 1, 2020, re-opening on Thursday, January 2, 2020. The campus community is reminded to turn off lights, shut down computers, and other office equipment, and close and lock exterior windows before leaving for the break.

During the closure some housing areas and other buildings will remain open. Laboratory buildings will be partially operational due to special needs of researchers and scientists, and some campus units' work schedules may require staffing during all or part of the closure. Fire, police, and environmental health and safety services will be provided to the campus community during this period, along with necessary utilities and other essential services (for exclusions, see power service interruption information below).

If you are required to work all or part of this closure on campus, you must receive approval from your unit head and principal officer. Once unit heads have concurrence from their principal officer, they are asked to notify Physical Plant directly of their plans to remain open or staffed during part or all of the closure on campus. Notifications should be made via email to allysonr@ucsc.edu, by campus mail to Allyson Raedeke, mailstop Physical Plant Services, or by fax 459-5121 no later than Friday, December 13, 2019, and should include the specific dates that offices will be occupied, as well as the number of occupants. This will ensure that open areas will receive necessary services during this period when most faculty, staff, and students are gone.

It is important to note, however, that building temperatures in underutilized areas will generally be reduced. Therefore, please advise staff to dress appropriately during this time. Faculty is urged to announce the closure broadly to their graduate students who may plan on working throughout the closures.

If you have facilities-related questions or would like further information on campus closure exceptions, please contact Allyson Raedeke at 459-5561.

Power service interruption December 26-30, 2019

In an effort to reduce the campus’s carbon footprint, a two-megawatt solar parking canopy will be built at the East Remote Parking Lot. Starting 7:00AM Thursday, December 26th through 7:00PM Monday, December 30th, campus electricity service will be shut down to install required equipment to connect the new Solar Photovoltaic System to the campus grid and perform testing. In buildings affected by this power outage, please power down your computers, printers, equipment, etc. before 7:00AM Thursday, December 26th in preparation for this power outage. Also please note elevators will not be operational during power outage.

Please review this service interruption announcement PDF for the status of your building and check with your Building Coordinator for additional information. If you have power service interruption questions, please email Nathan Weiner, UCSC Project Manager, naweiner@ucsc.edu.
