Alexander Wolf, dean of the Baskin School of Engineering, has appointed Darrell Long, a distinguished professor of engineering, to serve as a strategic faculty advisor for the school.

Long is the Malavalli Professor of Storage Systems Research and director emeritus of the Storage Systems Research Center (SSRC) at UC Santa Cruz. In addition to storage systems, his research addresses computer system performance, applied machine learning, and cyber security.

"In the immediate term I have asked Darrell to lead our efforts at creating a security technology and policy research center, advance engineering faculty recognition, and act as an ambassador for Baskin Engineering in various national and international fora," Wolf said.

Long brings to this role an extraordinary record as a researcher, educator, and the recipient of numerous awards, including most recently an IBM Faculty Research Award. He also has extensive experience with national laboratories, such as Sandia National Laboratories, and advisory committees to federal agencies, including the Committee on Defense Intelligence Agency Technology Forecasts and Reviews and the JASON Group, which advises the U.S. government on matters of science and technology.

A fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Long joined the UCSC faculty in 1988.
