Parking and traffic during year-end activities

Parking
As the campus prepares for the many commencement and year-end celebrations this weekend, I want to alert you to the impact this will have on traffic and parking. On Thursday, the Graduate Division will host their commencement in the Quarry Amphitheater beginning at 4pm. On Friday, there are 18 departmental or organizational celebrations scheduled throughout the day, resulting in hundreds of visitors needing on-campus parking. Parking in the East Remote lot will be free on Friday to accommodate many of those visitors. However, traffic on campus will be much heavier than usual, and parking for many celebrations will be in centrally-located parking lots. Please consider coordinating with your supervisor to work off-site or from home on Friday, or consider using alternative transportation to get to campus.

If you routinely park on campus with a valid A or B parking permit, you should be able to park in the lot you normally use on Thursday and Friday. Display your permit as usual, and please don't park in spaces reserved for VIPs.

Road Closures
Please be aware that Hagar Drive will be closed between the East Remote parking lot and McLaughlin Drive on Thursday and Friday from 2pm–5pm, and all day Saturday and Sunday from 7am–5pm. Steinhart Drive will be closed from Hagar Drive to McHenry Library from 2pm–5pm on Thursday and Friday, and from Hagar Drive to the Core West parking structure from 7am–5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Vehicles already parked in the Hahn or Quarry Plaza lots will be able to leave during the road closures. Parking in Quarry Plaza parking lot will be prohibited from 1pm–5pm on Thursday and Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Shuttles
Campus shuttles will be operating on the summer intersession Loop bus schedule on Friday; shuttles will operate every 20 minutes starting at 7:40 a.m., with added evening Loop buses operating until 10 p.m. During the weekend, campus Loop shuttle service will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Metro Buses
Metro service will be reduced on both Thursday and Friday due to "non-school term" service. TAPS is working with Metro to provide additional buses on Thursday; any buses added will be listed on the TAPS website as soon as the service is confirmed. If you plan to come to campus for weekend Commencement activities, please know that Metro buses serving the UCSC campus will be fare-free on Saturday and Sunday.

Rideshare Services
Rideshare services such as Lyft and Uber will use the Health Center parking lot (Lot 128) throughout the weekend as their sole pick up and drop off location. Both providers will utilize geo-fencing to create a virtual perimeter in order to avoid road closures.

More information, including day-by-day maps showing parking impacts and road closures, is available online at http://taps.ucsc.edu/event-parking/commencement-parking.html.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
