Commencement stories: Benjamin Smithers
Benjamin Smithers is a double major in mathematics and physics who is now working on his Ph.D.: an expedition into the world of neutrino physics.
“It was an honor working alongside the wonderful faculty and community at UC Santa Cruz; an experience that let me loose into the great playground of physics. I spent much of my time investigating the effects of highly energetic debris from particle collisions on silicon sensors. Using what I have learned so far, I am beginning work on my Ph.D.: an expedition into the exciting and exotic world of neutrino physics. I hope to continue this work for many years to come.”
Benjamin Smithers (pictured here at the European Organization for Nuclear Research [CERN] in Switzerland) is a double major in mathematics and physics. He received the coveted Dean’s Award/Chancellor’s Award for his senior thesis “Operation of the Prospective SiD BeamCal in the Expected High-Radiation Forward Environment of the ILC.” Upon graduation, Smithers (Merrill) starts a new job at CERN in Switzerland as a DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) researcher.
