UCSC Retirees Association to award first 'Silver Slug' scholarship for staff and dependents

The Silver Slug Award is a newly endowed scholarship created by the UC Santa Cruz Retirees Association to support staff and their dependents seeking a degree at UCSC.

The award will provide up to $2,000 during the 2018-19 academic year for the selected candidate. All staff and their dependents are eligible to apply.

Deadline is Monday, March 5 for applications for the first Silver Slug Award scholarship and may be made at https://retirees.ucsc.edu/scholarships/silver-slug-scholarship/index.html. The successful applicant will be notified by April 13.

The Silver Slug Award is the second endowed scholarship created by the UCSC Retirees Association. In addition to advocating for and keeping retired staff connected, the association has provided scholarships to UCSC students who are U.S military veterans with its Bruce Lane Memorial Scholarship for Military Veterans.

The association is participating in UC Santa Cruz’s Giving Day Feb. 28 to raise funds for both scholarships. The Bruce Lane family has pledged up to $30,000 to match Giving Day donations to the Lane Memorial scholarship 2-to-1. A total of $8,000 in 1-to-1 matching gift pledges for the Silver Slug Award for staff has been received to date.
