New director named for Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education (CARE) office

To: UC Santa Cruz Campus Community

From: Mary D. Knudston, DNSC, NP Executive Director Student Health Services/AVC Student Health & Wellness

I am pleased to announce that we have hired our new director for Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education program—CARE.

After an extensive search, Kelsey Hoie Ferrell joined our staff as the new CARE director December 4, 2017. She serves the campus community as an advocate, manager, and content expert on interpersonal and sexual violence. She is committed to approaching both prevention and intervention work from an intersectional and community-based approach.

Kelsey has been engaged in addressing the dynamics of social conflict, power and violence throughout her career. She has experience working with survivors of interpersonal and systemic violence, including immigrant and refugee groups, Native American youth, and survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking.

Kelsey served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the eastern European Republic of Moldova where she directed an anti-human trafficking initiative. She received her master’s degree in Conflict Resolution from Portland State University, and her bachelor's degree in Humanities from Fort Lewis College.

The CARE office at Kresge 714, across from Owl's Nest, is now fully staffed. Kelsey joins CARE staff members Emma Rouda, Violence Prevention Education Coordinator, and Tona Gonzalez Karlsson, Confidential Advocate. In addition, Claudia Velazquez,  our new administrative assistant also joined CARE December 4.

Kelsey, Emma, and Tona are all available as confidential advocates for student, staff, and faculty survivors of sexual violence, dating/domestic violence, stalking, and sexual harassment at UC Santa Cruz.

The CARE Team will host an open house for faculty and staff Friday, February 23. This will be a great opportunity to visit the CARE office and introduce yourself to the staff.
