The Seymour Marine Discovery Center presents a new multimedia show by renowned photographer Frans Lanting and his partner, Chris Eckstrom, about the wonders of wild Africa on Saturday, January 27, at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. There will be two shows, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets and in person at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center.

During many journeys to Africa over the past thirty years, Lanting and Eckstrom have documented the wildlife and natural heritage of some of the most celebrated landscapes on Earth, from the sweeping vistas of the Serengeti Plains and the water wilderness of the Okavango Delta to the enchanting deserts of Namibia, the bewildering jungles of the Congo Basin, and the otherworldly island of Madagascar.

With their images, videos, and stories, Lanting and Eckstrom will share an enduring vision of the continent’s primeval natural heritage, along with fresh impressions about what is at stake in the 21st century.

INTO AFRICA is based on Frans Lanting’s landmark exhibition of the same name, which was produced as a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History and the National Geographic Society, with support from the World Wildlife Fund. Lanting and Eckstrom’s new book, INTO AFRICA, was released in October 2017; copies will be available for sale and signing at the event.

Proceeds from this show will benefit the marine science education and conservation programs at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at UC Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Lab. Overlooking the Monterey Bay, the Seymour Center is a "living classroom" featuring exhibits, aquariums, touch pools, whale skeletons, full-scale elephant seal models, the Ocean Discovery Shop, and unsurpassed ocean vistas. The aquariums and exhibits feature the everyday tools of ocean exploration and focus on research conducted by scientists locally and around the world. Interactive stations provide hands-on learning experiences, and docents lead tours and bring marine science to life. The center is a community-supported marine science education center of UC Santa Cruz.
