Campus appoints new associate vice provost for Academic Affairs

After a campuswide search, UC Santa Cruz has appointed Martin Berger to serve as associate vice provost for Academic Affairs.

A term appointment through June 2019, Berger will work on four specific high-profile and important projects.

"Professor Berger brings a strong combination of leadership skills, project management experience, and disciplinary knowledge of gender and ethnicity issues. We are excited to have him moving these projects forward, and for the impact they will have for our campus" said Herbert Lee, vice provost for Academic Affairs.

The four projects are helping manage the strategic academic planning effort, co-leading the Beyond Compliance initiative, working with the Academic Personnel Office to complete a comprehensive review of the processes involved with alleged violations of the faculty code of conduct policy; and design and implement a comprehensive training program for department chairs.

Berger will also serve as the associate campus diversity officer for faculty, under the direction of the vice provost for Academic Affairs, and will work in partnership with the campus diversity officer for staff and students to respond to hate-bias reporting and campus climate issues.

Last year, Berger served as acting vice provost for Academic Affairs while Herbert Lee was serving as interim campus provost/executive vice chancellor.

Berger is a professor of history of art/visual culture, studying the interpretation of visual representation of gender and race.
