After additional investigation, the UC Santa Cruz Police Department has classified the Nov. 11 aggravated assault as a hate crime. Investigators believe that at least one of the suspects yelled homophobic slurs because of the actual or perceived sexual orientation of the victim.
In addition, we have received several tips and are seeking community assistance in identifying suspects who may be associated with this case.
- On Friday, November 11, at approximately 10 p.m., three subjects in a 2010 or newer white Ford Mustang yelled obscenities at a female student walking on Meyer Road. No further description of the males has been provided.
- On Friday, November 11, shortly before the assault, surveillance video in the area captured three males walking north through the Quarry Plaza. It appears that one was wearing a hat. Due to the quality of the video, further description of the subjects is unavailable at this time.
- On Saturday, November 12, at approximately 10 p.m., female students in the Porter Meadow were approached by three males. The students chose to leave the meadow and entered into the Porter B residence hall. Shortly thereafter, the three males were seen in the Porter B residence hall, and are believed to have written obscene words on the white board of one of the female students. No further description of the males has been provided.

Report all crimes and suspicious activity or persons by dialing 911 or 831–459–2231, ext. 1. Reports may also be made by using one of the many “blue light,” emergency or elevator phones located throughout the campus, or in person at the UC Santa Cruz Police Department.
Safety Tips
Victims are not responsible for being victimized, regardless of any action or inaction on their part. Perpetrators are responsible for crimes and their effects.
- Report all suspicious persons, in-progress crimes, and emergencies to the UC Santa Cruz Police Department by calling 911.
- Be alert to your surroundings. Your actions can help prevent others from becoming victims. Attempt to keep a safe distance from strangers.
- Whenever possible, please remember to lock your vehicle and residence doors. Keep valuables secured and out of sight.
- Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, tell someone, avoid the person or leave the area.
- Encourage friends to travel in pairs or with trusted companions, especially at night or in remote areas.
- Encourage the use of the Night Safety Escort Service offered by the UC Santa Cruz Police Department Monday through Thursday evenings, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. More information about this service can be found online.
