I am pleased to announce that Herbert Lee, vice provost of academic affairs and a professor of applied mathematics and statistics, has agreed to serve as campus provost/executive vice chancellor on an interim basis. Pending approval from UC President Janet Napolitano, this appointment will begin Dec. 1 and extend until we fill the position on a permanent basis. As previously announced, CP/EVC Alison Galloway is stepping down at the end of December; a national search for her successor is underway.
As vice provost of academic affairs (VPAA), a position he has held since 2010, Professor Lee is well-positioned to take on this role. As VPAA, he is responsible for academic operations, including administration, planning, review, and development, and he advises the CP/EVC on resource allocation and personnel policy. He is also responsible for accreditation, online education, and the new Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning, and he serves as the campus diversity officer for faculty. The CP/EVC is responsible for all day-to-day academic and administrative operations of the campus, including budget and long-term planning.
Herbie joined the UC Santa Cruz faculty in 2002, after earning his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and his B.S. from Yale University.
Please join me in thanking Herbie for accepting this important role.
