It is with profound sadness that I share news of the death of Alex Helman, who passed away on Thursday, February 5, with his wife Aliki by his side. Alex has been a valued colleague and member of the UC Santa Cruz Physics Department for almost 20 years. For most of that time he managed the lecture demonstration laboratory for the department, and he also did substantial work for the upper division Physics teaching laboratories.
Alex was a highly creative physicist who contributed many new and interesting demonstrations and who worked closely with all of us to improve the students' learning experience in the large Physics lectures. We will also miss his kind heart, his artistry, his teaching advice, his stories, his sense of humor, and his love of life.
