Scott Hernandez-Jason has joined UC Santa Cruz as director of news and media relations. His first day was Monday, December 1. Hernandez-Jason will be the chief content developer and lead the campus public information writers in focusing on high-value media placement for news about the campus and its research and teaching.
Hernandez-Jason joins UC Santa Cruz from UC Merced where he held a similar position as director of news and social media since June 2012, leading a team that regularly succeeded in telling stories in creative ways to key audiences. He joined UC Merced as a public information officer in November 2009.
He earned a B.A. in journalism from California State University, Chico and worked for more than three years as a reporter for the Merced Sun-Star. He led a video team that received an award of excellence for news and research video from CASE, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
“I believe Scott will bring new energy and ideas toward our goal of strengthening the reputation and identity of UC Santa Cruz,” said Keith Brant, vice chancellor of university relations.
