Campus Traffic Delays During Road Construction Work

To: UCSC Community

From: Larry Pageler, Transportation and Parking Services Director

Construction crews are expected to begin major roadway repair work on Monday July 28th, on campus roads in four different locations including Hagar Drive (between the Wellness Center and McLaughlin Drive), two sections of Heller Drive (from College Eight Road to Meyer Drive, and from McLaughlin Drive to the North Remote Parking area), and Oakes Road (between heller Drive and the Oakes Circle). Work will include demolition of the existing road, pavement grinding, excavation, grading, roadway overlay, pedestrian access improvements, bus-pad improvements, and road striping. The estimated completion date is September 5th.

Two-way traffic control will be in place for the duration of the project. Drivers and transit users should expect up to five-minute delays in both directions while construction is occurring. Additionally, large construction equipment will occasionally create noisy conditions near the project areas.

Bicyclists are strongly encouraged to use alternative routes during construction, as the road surface will not be optimal for bike use. When feasible, an alternate (parallel) route will be provided, with signs in place to delineate the detour.

Bicyclists accessing facilities with the project corridors should use extra caution when traversing construction areas. Pedestrian access and crossings will be open during construction. Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling through the project corridors, especially when construction workers are present.

Questions about the 2014 Road Rehabilitation Project should be directed to Damon Adlao, Project Manager with Physical Plant, at 459-2338.
