In Memoriam--Gordon Smith

To: Marine Science Community

From: Steve Davenport, Managing Director of Long Marine Laboratory, Institute of Marine Sciences

By now most of you know that we lost Gordon Smith, our friend, co-worker, and long-time skipper of the research vessel David Johnston earlier this month. Many of us are still reeling from the news of his death.

Gordon began working as the skipper of our research vessel in late 1986 and continued in that capacity until we retired the boat in late 2003.  Gordon provided enthusiastic help and support to scores of faculty, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate classes who needed access to the coastal waters of California.  He was an intrinsic part of the Institute of Marine Sciences, and became a great friend to many of those who worked with him.  His true interest in the research and the researchers he supported buoyed the success of many coastal research projects.

We will never forget his enthusiasm for life and his boisterous laughter.

A memorial service for Gordon will take place tomorrow, Thursday November 21, 11:00AM at the Twin Lakes Church in Aptos.

Please see his obituary in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
