Sociology's Reinarman wins local ACLU's 'Hammer of Justice Award'

Craig Reinarman, professor of sociology at UC Santa Cruz, was presented with the "Hammer of Justice Award" by the Santa Cruz chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU presented the award October 6 as it celebrated its 50th anniversary as a local chapter. Reinarman also received proclamations from state Sen. Bill Monning, Assemblyman Mark Stone, and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian.

The award was given for Reinarman's contributions to the defense of civil rights and liberties across a range of issues over many years in Santa Cruz, particularly with regard to the effects of the war on drugs on the Bill of Rights.

Other awards of recognition were presented to the community group Barrios Unidos and Adam Spickler, chairman of the board of the Diversity Center.
