Assault with a deadly weapon on campus

UC Santa Cruz police report that a female staff member was hit with a metal pipe at 11:46 a.m today in the loading dock area of the College 9/10 dining hall.

The assailant is described as a black man, approximately 30 to 35 years old, 6 feet tall, weighing 170 pounds. He has shoulder-length cornrow-braided hair, no facial hair, and is wearing all-black clothing.

Police said the attack was unprovoked. The weapon is described as a metal pipe approximately 16 inches long.

The victim suffered a cut to the top of her head and was taken
by ambulance to Dominican Hospital  for treatment.

The suspect fled on foot south toward McLaughlin Drive and then south across campus.

UPDATE 4 p.m.

After the incident, UCSC police established a perimeter and searched the area but did not locate the suspect. Police are continuing to investigate.

Area law enforcement agencies have been informed and are on the lookout for the assailant.

The victim is undergoing treatment at Dominican Hospital for injuries that are not considered life threatening.

Police urge campus community members to keep a watchful eye and call 9-1-1 if they see anything suspicious
