In a recent analysis of the world’s top universities, UC Santa Cruz ranked third in research influence as measured by the number of times its published work is cited by academics.
Five UCSC students win Fulbright scholarships
Five UC Santa Cruz students in four disciplines are winners of Fulbright scholarships for a year of research and study abroad. Two are environmental studies graduate students; the others are in history and literature, and another just received her Ph.D. in biology.
McHenry Library re-opens with new look, amenities
This is definitely not the library your parents used. It’s not institutional. It’s wired and it’s convenient. You can eat and drink, and yes…even speak freely to your friends and colleagues, and study in small groups. It even has a few restaurant–style booths you can deftly slide into to read, work on your laptop, or interact with other students.
Biologist Harry Noller honored by Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2012 Gregori Aminoff Prize in Crystallography to Harry Noller, the Sinsheimer Professor of Molecular Biology, and two of his collaborators, Marat Yusupov and Gulnara Yusupova of the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in France.
Professor publishes first video of tool-using fish
Giacomo Bernardi, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, published the first video of a fish using a tool. In the video, published in the journal Coral Reefs, an orange-dotted tuskfish digs a clam out of the sand, carries it over to a rock, and repeatedly throws the clam against the rock to crush it.
