THE SHOW

Co-produced by Tandy Beal & Company and the UCSC Theater Arts Department, and directed by Tandy Beal herself, 'Mixed Nutz!' is a fun-filled, energetic extravaganza that gives a tip of the hat--and the juggling pin!--to the traditional Nutcracker, while featuring dancers, circus artists, gymnasts, and vocalists all representing a world of cultures.

'Mixed Nutz!' playfully maintains the true spirit and basic story of the traditional Nutcracker: festively dressed party-goers enter for an evening of holiday merriment, young Clara receives a toy nutcracker as a special gift, and magic begins to unfold--with entertaining side trips in Candyland, a visit by the Sugar Plum Fairy, a Waltz of the Flowers, and much more.

Over 30 dancers and circus artists perform acts of beauty, comedy and skill while Tchaikovsky’s glorious music is sung--a cappella--by the Bay Area’s multi-talented vocal group, SoVoSó (“Soul…Voice…Song”) with Santa Cruz-based vocalist Lori Rivera, who returns this year to lend her substantial vocal talent to the show.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel calls 'Mixed Nutz!' “the ideal holiday experience.”

THE ARTISTS (Who’s back and who’s new this season)

In addition to beautiful, flowing dance pieces and amazing a cappella vocal music by SoVoSó, 'Mixed Nutz!' features a cast of world-class performing artists--some of whom are making their 'Mixed Nutz!' debut this holiday.

Chinese footbalancer and acrobat Wang Hong returns to wow audiences with her grace and skill… hand-to-hand balancing is new this year with a remarkable act by Jennings McCown and Chinese acrobat Xiao Hong Weng… Kerri Kresinski joins the show for two weekends with her stunning aerial silk performance, and aerial hoop artist Sylphie Currin is back to dazzle us from great heights… circus artists Iman Lizarazu, Saki, and Jan Damm were audience favorites last season, and they are joined by newcomer Jasper Patterson of the New Eccentrics. We also welcome back Mexican folklorico dancers from Watsonville’s Corazon en Flor and UCSC’s Los Mejicas, plus hip-hoppers, local gymnasts, and dancers from the UCSC Theater Arts Department.
