It is with sadness that I write to inform you that Robert Jones, former captain with the UCSC Police Department, died at his home last night after a three-year struggle to recover from a tragic bike accident. He was 52 years old.

Robert joined the campus community in November 1990, when he was hired as a police officer; he rose to the rank of captain in 2003. Not only was Robert a very effective officer, he was an extremely popular member of our community. His willingness to assist anyone who needed help defined Robert’s character; that he always did it with a warm smile made him a special person and colleague.

Robert is survived by his wife, Toni; his children, Matt and Kate; and his stepchildren, Austin and Gunter. Details regarding a memorial event are not yet available.

Please join me in extending condolences to Toni, other family members, and to Robert’s many friends and colleagues, on and off campus.
