UCSC’s Commencement Ceremonies Begin Friday, June 19

UCSC’s class of 1998 will hold commencement exercises on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 19-21. This year, the following numbers of students are candidates for degrees: 1,630, bachelor of arts or science degrees; 156, master’s degrees; and 55, doctorate degrees. A small number of UCSC students will receive graduate certificates.

Each of UCSC’s eight residential colleges holds its own commencement ceremony at various campus locations. In addition, the Jack Baskin School of Engineering will hold its inaugural graduation ceremonies at the Performing Arts Mainstage Theater. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, June 19

  • The Graduate Studies Division commencement ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Alex Gonzalez, president of California State University, San Marcos. For more information, call 459-2510.

Saturday, June 20

  • The Porter College commencement ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on the Porter Quadrangle. The keynote speaker will be social activist and author Alice McGrath. For more information, call 459-2857.
  • The Merrill College commencement ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be Santa Cruz County supervisor Mardi Wormhoudt. For more information, call 459-4827.
  • The Cowell College commencement ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. in the Cowell Courtyard. The keynote speaker will be Margo Hendricks, associate professor of literature. For more information, call 459-2255.
  • The Oakes College commencement ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on the Oakes Upper Lawn. The keynote speaker will be Oakes provost David Anthony. For more information, call 459-2550.
  • The Kresge College commencement ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be Carolyn Martin Shaw, professor of anthropology. For more information, call 459-4434.

Sunday, June 21

  • The Crown College commencement ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. The keynote speaker will be State Assemblyman Fred Keeley. For more information, call 459-2101.
  • The College Eight commencement ceremony will be held at noon in the College Eight Plaza. The keynote speaker will be lecturer in writing Daniel Scripture. For more information, call 459-2033.
  • The Stevenson College commencement ceremony will be held at noon on the Stevenson Knoll. The keynote speakers will be Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood and lecturer in history Bruce Thompson. For more information, call 459-3108.
  • The inaugural Jack Baskin School of Engineering commencement ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Mainstage Theater. The keynote speaker will be David Kashtan, chairman of the board and chief technology officer of Network Alchemy. For more information, call 459-2565.
