In a reception at the Cowell College Dining Hall, Myrlie Evers-Williams meets with a high school student who was brought to the convocation festivities as part of UCSC’s outreach efforts. Students at the reception came from Seaside, Salinas, Monterey, San Jose, and the San Joaquin Valley. They later attended the convocation at the Civic Auditorium in downtown Santa Cruz.

In front of 1,300 people at the Civic Auditorium, Evers-Williams gave a stirring convocation speech–invoking the memories of slain civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and her husband, Medgar Evers. She also challenged the audience to "seize the opportunity" to realize their potential and create a level playing field for all people.
