Winter-storm warning issued for Santa Cruz area

To: UCSC Community

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter-storm warning for the Santa Cruz area through Saturday. Rainfall totals are predicted to be in the five- to six-inch range, and winds will gain in strength. This additional rain and wind, coupled with ground saturation from the previous storm systems this month, could potentially result in downed trees and other storm-related damage on campus.

UCSC is open for operation today (Friday, January 25). But members of the UCSC community are asked to exercise extreme caution when traveling on and off campus.

Information Technology Services recommends that all computers, fax machines, scanners, and other electrical equipment be shut off and unplugged before you leave campus this evening to protect your devices from power surges. Make sure to plug your equipment back in upon returning to campus on Monday.

As warranted, updated information will be available via the campus's telephone hotline, 459-INFO; the UCSC home page (http://www.ucsc.edu); the campus's Emergency web site (http://emergency.ucsc.edu); and KZSC Radio (88.1 FM). In addition, the Emergency web site includes links to the National Weather Service and up-to-date forecasts and current road and travel conditions.

Thank you.
