The Arts Division will soon begin construction of a world-class production and post-production facility for its Social Documentation MFA program.

FEATURED STORIES
Xavier Livermon, associate professor of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, was hired two years ago to build and start the minor. He has become the program’s guiding visionary as well as its first designated faculty member.

UC Santa Cruz’s Black Studies program has hired two new professors, and students in the minor say it’s filling in missing pieces and providing a critical framework for their studies going forward.

Four galaxies from the first epoch of COSMOS-Web NIRCam observations highlight a range of structures: a barred spiral galaxy (top left); a gravitational lens (top right), where the mass of the central galaxy is causing the light from a distant galaxy to be stretched into arcs; a nearby galaxy displaying shells of material, suggesting it merged with another galaxy in its past (lower left); a barred spiral galaxy with several clumps of active star formation (lower right). The first images released from the James Webb Space Telescope’s COSMOS-Web program offer a treasure trove of early galaxies, including dazzling examples of spiral galaxies, gravitational lensing, and evidence of galaxy mergers.

STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE
Christa Seidl

Ecology and evolutionary biology Ph.D. student Christa Seidl won first place in this year’s Grad Slam, an annual contest that gives students an opportunity to explain their work and why it matters.

UC Santa Cruz students will have more housing and childcare options in a few years. The UC Board of Regents issued approvals allowing the campus to move forward with Student Housing West. The campus will solicit bids for the first phase of the project later this year, with the goal of starting construction in early 2024.

Student Housing West will provide housing for more than 3,000 students and roughly double the capacity of the campus’s current childcare center following recent project and finance approvals from the UC Board of Regents.
