Humpbacks and other baleen whales feed by engulfing a large amount of water and prey, filtering the water through their baleen plates and swallowing the prey. |
Analyzing 10 years of data, researchers at UC Santa Cruz and Stanford University found that whales in the Southern Ocean eat twice as much krill as previous estimates suggested, and that krill-feeding blue and humpback whales off the California coast eat two to three times as much as expected. |
