Pay for Performance Update Appraisal Period will remain July 1 – June 30

To: UC Santa Cruz Staff

From: Steve Stein, Associate Vice Chancellor, Staff Human Resources

In December, 2016 SHR communicated the intention to use a truncated 2016/17 performance appraisal period of nine months (ending on March 31) as part of a transition to a different twelve-month cycle.  We have reconsidered this idea based on feedback from several campus constituencies. We are remaining on the current cycle of July 1 – June 30.

We will make every effort to minimize retroactive pay.  The appraisal period will be revisited in the future.

A few points to stress regarding the topic of performance regardless of the cycle periods:

  •      Managers and supervisors are encouraged to work with their team members to develop goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART goals).
  •      Managers and supervisors are encouraged to have frequent and candid conversations (at least monthly) with their team members about their job performance. This way the end-of-year review contains no surprises and is more of a summary of the previous conversations; and should take much less time to prepare.

To obtain additional campus input from staff, a brief survey will be issued soon regarding possible changes to the performance rating scales and the appraisal forms.

Please watch for the survey and for upcoming communications. If you have any questions, please contact Bill Parro at wcparro@ucsc.edu.
