Active Learning Classroom project in the Science & Engineering Library begins

To: UC Santa Cruz Faculty

From: University Librarian, Elizabeth Cowell and Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences, Paul Koch

With the start of the Active Learning Classroom (ALC) construction project in the Science & Engineering (S&E) Library, project planners want to thank library patrons and Science Hill occupants in advance for their flexibility and patience during construction. Please note that the S&E Library building will be open, and library services available, during the project. The only exception is December 12-22, 2016 when the building will be closed for demolition in project space. During this brief closure, collection material located at S&E will be available during the closure by emailing, circulation@ucsc.edu, or calling the McHenry Library service desk at 9-5185. Campus planners scheduled the most disruptive construction activity during the break between academic quarters in an effort to mitigate the impact on faculty, students, and staff who use the S&E Library. ALC construction is scheduled to conclude in September 22, 2017.

The University Library and Division of Physical and Biological Sciences are excited to be launching this project to create the first classroom of its kind at UC Santa Cruz. The ALC will accommodate up to 99 people in an open floor plan with flexible furnishings and technology systems to facilitate active inquiry-based student-group-instructor interactions. Library patrons will be able to access the ALC when not in use by PBSci for classes. The target for ALC operation is Fall Quarter 2017.

Information about the ALC project is available at the University Library's project site here, the Physical Planning & Construction project list here, and the Physical & Biological Sciences Active Learning Initiative site here. Requests for information not listed on the project sites can be submitted to the following people:

Questions about the Active Learning Classroom should be directed to Manuel Ares
Questions about construction should be directed to Andrea Hilderman
Questions about library services should be directed to Sarah Troy

Additional information about the library services during the ALC project can be found in the University Librarian's November 30 communication to faculty here.
