Hazardous conditions on area beaches for the next couple days

The National Weather Service is warning of a high surf advisory in effect from 6 a.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. Use caution when at the beach. Be aware of potential impacts to your safety:

Impacts

  • Sneaker Waves (moderate confidence in occurrence)
    • Large wave sets possible after long periods of small waves.
    • Large waves may catch people unaware and pull them into the cold, turbulent ocean.
    • Lulls in large wave activity may last up to 30 minutes.
    • Remain farther back from the water's edge and off of rocks and jetties.
  • Rip Currents (high confidence in occurrence)
    • Long period energetic swell will bring enhanced rip current activity to coastal waters.
    • Beach visitors are encouraged to remain away from and out of the water during this swell event.
  • Large Surf (high confidence in occurrence)
    • Surf heights of 22 to 27 feet with larger sets possible.
    • Beach visitors are encouraged to remain away from and out of the water during this swell event.
