Appointment of Arts Dean

To: UCSC Community

From: Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor Alison Galloway

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Solt as dean of the Arts Division. She begins her appointment in just one week—on August 15.
Susan joins UC Santa Cruz from California Institute of the Arts, School of Theater, where she has been since 1995. While at CalArts, she served as dean for eight years (1995-2003) and for seven of those as founding artistic director/producer at the CalArts Center for New Theater (renamed the Center for New Performance in 2006).
Susan specializes in theater, and has extensively studied acting, directing, and dramaturgy. She is also a skilled filmmaker and producer, having produced feature films such as Presumed Innocent and Doc Hollywood. To learn more about Susan, please read our campus news announcement of her appointment.
I want to express my gratitude to Bill Ladusaw, who has done a wonderful job leading the Arts Division as interim dean since January.
Susan succeeds David Yager who guided the Arts Division between July 2009 and January 2016.
Finally, I want to thank members of the search committee for their service, including committee chair Sheldon Kamieniecki, dean of the Social Sciences Division, who oversaw the national search to fill this key academic leadership position.
