Rob Fairlie, chair of the UC Santa Cruz economics department, has been appointed as a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).

The non-profit, non-partisan organization was founded in 1920 to conduct economic research and disseminate its findings among academics, public policy makers, and business professionals. It is best known for being the official recorders of the U.S. business cycle, noting when the nation is officially in or out of recession.

Fairlie was appointed to the education group in May. Research associates are nominated and appointed to the NBER and competition is stiff. Twenty-five Nobel Prize winners in economics and 13 past chairs of the President's Council of Economic Advisers have held NBER affiliations.

Fairlie’s research interests include entrepreneurship, education, information technology, inequality, labor economics, and immigration.
