The U.S. News 2017 Best Graduate Schools guide evaluates graduate schools for business, education, engineering, law, medicine, and nursing, and specialties within each area. In each discipline, all or nearly all UC graduate schools were ranked. This year's lists place the Baskin School of Engineering at 87th among engineering schools and the UCSC Education Department at 78th among education schools. UC Santa Cruz was also ranked 82nd among graduate programs in fine arts.
The annual Best Graduate Schools rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research output, and student achievement.
Graduate programs in the sciences were ranked in 2014, when UC Santa Cruz was ranked 16th in Earth sciences, 39th in physics, 55th in biological sciences, 73rd in mathematics, and 84th in chemistry. Graduate programs in the social sciences and humanities were ranked in 2013, when UC Santa Cruz was ranked 39th in English, 58th in economics, 59th in sociology, and 64th in history.
