Diversity group to explore Principles of Community

The UC Santa Cruz Staff Diversity Group will be hosting monthly interactive workshops on the Principles of Community.

"We will explore what the principle means from both an institutional and individual viewpoint," said group chair Ricki Carr, "and look at different ways we can incorporate the principle into our everyday lives to ultimately make the way we view our workplace as well as our larger community more positive and insightful."

The workshops will be 90 minutes long. Attendees are encouraged to bring lunch, if desired. Refreshments will be provided.

The first event is from noon to 1:30 p.m. November 24 in Kerr Hall, Room 212. It will focus on the principle of "diverse": We embrace diversity in all its forms and we strive for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened and productive environment.

Frank Widman, a member of the group and the Training and Development Manager for the campus, will be the presenter.

For those people who work off campus or at the base of campus, the Staff Diversity Group is arranging carpools to get to Kerr Hall. If you need a ride or want to participate in this, please contact Carr at ricki@ucsc.edu.

The rest of the workshops are as follows:

  • Purposeful - Tuesday, December 15th, 2015
  • Open - Tuesday, January 26, 2016
  • Caring - Tuesday, February 23, 2016
  • Just - Tuesday, March 22, 2016
  • Discipline - Tuesday, April 26, 2016
  • Celebrative - Tuesday, May 24, 2016

"Everyone's viewpoint and experience matters and I believe that together we can make a difference and see positive change," Carr said."

Those who attend four or more workshops will be presented a certificate at a celebration the group will hold in June 2016.
