Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Alison Galloway stepping down

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Chancellor George Blumenthal

With more than 25 years of service to UC Santa Cruz, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC) Alison Galloway has let me know that she will be stepping down from her post at the end of December 2016. Alison will be returning to her research and teaching in anthropology.

I am thankful for Alison's service and leadership over the last five years, especially during some very challenging budget years. She has been responsible for the day-to-day academic and administrative operations of the campus, including budget oversight and long-term planning.

Alison's commitment to student success is highlighted by her initiatives to increase retention rates for undergraduate students, enhance academic pathways to allow students to graduate in four years or less, and secure recognition as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

Alison and I have worked together on many important campus projects. I have enjoyed our collaboration and teamwork over the years. UC Santa Cruz has been well-served by her deep roots on campus and in the community, as well as by her passion for the university and its students, faculty, and staff.

Alison joined the UC Santa Cruz faculty in 1990. She had served as chair of the Anthropology Department, as well as chair and vice chair of the UCSC Academic Senate. Just prior to her current appointment, Alison served as Vice Provost of Academic Affairs and Dean of University Extension.

Throughout her tenure as CP/EVC, Alison had continued to be one of the nation's leading forensic scientists. She is frequently asked by law enforcement officials to analyze and identify human remains. Because many of the cases she works on are homicides, she has referred to her work as "giving voice to victims." Alison earned her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arizona and her B.A. in anthropology from UC Berkeley.

A search committee for the national recruitment of a new CP/EVC will be convened and announced soon. In the meantime, please join me in expressing appreciation to Alison for her many outstanding contributions to UC Santa Cruz.
