In Memoriam: Christopher Chitty

The History of Consciousness department, and the Divisions of Humanities and Graduate Studies mourn the loss of graduate student Christopher Chitty (1983-2015). We offer our condolences to family, friends and the students, faculty and staff who shared his life.

Hailing from Alpharetta, Georgia, Chris joined the History of Consciousness doctoral program in 2008 after having worked with Professor Gopal Balakrishnan at the University of Chicago, where he received his B.A. in Political Science. At the time of his death, he was working on a dissertation entitled “Sexual Hegemony, Early Modern Republics, and the Culture of Sodomy” with Gopal Balakrishnan, Carla Freccero, and Christopher Nealon at The Johns Hopkins University. He was also an ardent campus activist, having participated in the university occupations of 2009. Chris was a dedicated and rigorous teacher, deeply committed to his students.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 25 at Santa Cruz Memorial Park, 1927 Ocean Street Extension, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
