Peter Fischer, adjunct professor of physics at UC Santa Cruz, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Election as an APS Fellow is a major recognition of professional accomplishment from the leading organization of physicists.

Fischer's expertise is in characterizing magnetic materials with polarized x-rays. He is also strongly engaged in developing the instrumentation needed for this work, including x-ray optics for x-ray microscopy. His research interests include magnetism on the nano- and mesoscale, magnetic x-ray microscopy and spectroscopy, ultra-fast spin dynamics, and soft x-ray tomography of condensed matter. A staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Fischer joined the UCSC faculty as an adjunct professor in 2014.

The citation from APS recognizes Fischer for "contributions to imaging spin structures and their dynamics with high resolution magnetic soft x-ray microscopy."

Election as an APS Fellow is a distinct honor signifying recognition by one's professional peers. Each year, elected fellows number no more than one-half of one percent of APS membership. APS represents over 50,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry in the United States and throughout the world.
