After a national search for the University Registrar, the Division of Undergraduate Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Tchad Sanger.

The University Registrar provides leadership on matters related to policies and programs that serve as structural support for the instructional mission of the campus and provides support for student success and graduation. The Office of the Registrar includes a professional staff of 22, 3-5 student staff, and has budgetary responsibility for $1.3 million. The University Registrar plays a critical role in shaping the technological vision for the campus in support of undergraduate and graduate education, collaborating on the development, prioritization, and implementation of technological solutions within applicable student data systems. The University Registrar is an ex officio member of the Academic Senate, serves on its Committee on Educational Policy (CEP), and is charged with implementing and interpreting relevant academic policy as established by the Academic Senate. The University Registrar is the campus compliance officer for the privacy of student information and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Tchad received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is currently Interim University Registrar, following the retirement of Pamela Hunt-Carter last year. He began his career on campus in 1993 as Public Information Adviser in the Office of the Registrar. He later transitioned to College Eight and then Stevenson in advising roles before serving as a Coordinating Academic Preceptor in 2002, where he was instrumental in the conversion to the current Academic Information System (AIS) in 2004. He later served as the Advising and Degree Audit Process Manager, before becoming the Associate Registrar - Advising, Records, and Enrollment in 2006. Tchad has served as an AIS Team Lead/Project member since 1999. He also served as the Chair for the UC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex Association and Co-Chair for the UC Santa Cruz Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Community Concerns Committee, where he advocated for same-sex domestic partner benefits, and inclusion and safety for transgender and intersex communities.

Tchad is known for working tirelessly on behalf of students, faculty, staff and alumni. As he moves into his new campus leadership role, he will be supporting his team in managing the complex processes associated with supporting student goals to degree completion. Tchad leads by example and believes in the mission of UC Santa Cruz and constantly seeks ways to improve student satisfaction.

Tchad’s expertise and years of experience at UCSC has him poised to initiate needed technological and structural change, and his initial priorities include:

  • review current organization of the Office of the Registrar and provide a structure to best serve campus constituencies;
  • review options to support curriculum management through integrated course approval and interactive course catalog; and
  • continue to automate and develop efficient processes for advisers, staff, and faculty to allow more proactive and personalized service to students in support of retention and graduation. These will include AIS enhancements, report development in support of curricular management and early identification of at risk students, and enhanced graduation processes.

Within his role of campus compliance officer for the privacy of student information, Tchad will continue to engage the campus in best practices and legal requirements, such as through the Registrar's Online FERPA Training, recommended for all individuals who interact with students in any capacity.
