Like many of you, I awoke this morning to the horrific news that a number of people were killed last night by a gunman in Isla Vista, a community adjacent to UC Santa Barbara. I want to share with you a statement that UC President Janet Napolitano just issued about this tragedy.

I have reached out to Chancellor Henry Yang, offering resources and assistance in any way that would help our sister campus. Police Chief Nader Oweis has also been in contact with UCSB police, with a similar offer of assistance.

As it's a three-day weekend, offices on our campus will be closed until Tuesday morning. But if there are UCSC students who need support before our Counseling and Psychological Services Office reopens, please don't hesitate to contact the after-hours phone service (831-459-2628) that CAPS provides.

I know that I speak for our entire campus community when I say that our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims of this tragedy.
