Possible UAW Strike in June

To: UCSC Community

From: Executive Vice Chancellor Alison Galloway

The United Auto Workers union, representing academic student employees on UC campuses, has indicated that it is preparing for a systemwide strike that would begin June 7.

While UC's Office of the President has not received formal notice of such an activity, I want to make sure you are at least aware of the possibility of a UAW strike involving teaching assistants on our campus during finals week and commencement weekend — and continuing through June 17.

UC and union representatives have to date been unable to reach agreement on a successor contract. However, the parties are scheduled to resume bargaining for up to three days, beginning on Wednesday, May 28.

I remain hopeful that this three-day negotiating session will be successful and a systemwide strike averted. It's also possible this round of bargaining will not lead to an agreement.

If it appears that strike activity in fact will occur, we will provide additional information related to any impacts on finals, our commencement schedule, and other areas of campus operation.

Thank you for your patience.
