Campus Access and Parking this Saturday

To: UCSC Community

From: Nader Oweis, University Police Chief; Larry Pageler, Transportation and Parking Services Director

This Saturday, May 10, the Student Union Assembly is sponsoring the Edge of Eden Music Festival on UCSC's East Field. Several thousand concertgoers will start arriving by 2pm and stay until the show ends at 10pm. We anticipate heavy traffic congestion along Bay Street, Coolidge Drive, and Hagar Drive as concertgoers arrive and depart. In addition, from 5pm until approximately 11:30pm, Hagar Drive will be closed between the East Remote parking lot and Quarry Plaza.

Concertgoers arriving by car will be charged a flat $10 parking fee upon entry as directed to any parking lots on the east side of campus (e.g. East Remote, Cowell, Stevenson, Merrill, or Hahn). Campus residents who regularly park in the East Remote are requested to relocate their cars Saturday morning to the West Remote or North Remote lots, or to parking lots located at Oakes, College Eight, or Kresge that don't require permits on weekends. Please check parking lot entry signs at these lots for hours when permits are rehired, as Parking Enforcement will be active throughout the day.

"Regular" campus life—as well as several other special events—will also be taking place across campus Saturday. Persons traveling to campus should consider using SCMTD transit, or driving through the West Entrance if arriving at or after 2pm.

Concertgoers are strongly encouraged to use public transit to travel to and from the event. Attendees can ride fare-free throughout the day on all SCMTD Metro buses serving UCSC (Routes 10, 16, 19, and 20) by displaying a printed Edge of Eden ticket when boarding. Metro bus service along Laurel, Mission, and Bay Streets will be increased to provide extra capacity throughout the afternoon and evening.

On-campus transit route modifications will be in place from 5pm until approximately 11:30pm. SCMTD Metro buses and Night Loop shuttles will travel counterclockwise through the campus (from the Main Entrance up Hagar and across campus, then out the West Entrance). During these hours the East Night Core shuttle will not serve The Village or the East Remote parking lot. Night Owl shuttles will operate on their normal Saturday service schedule.
