UAW Strike Activity on April 2-3

If strike activities occur on the UC Santa Cruz campus, information updates and known service impacts will be posted on this page. In addition to updating this page as information warrants, the Public Affairs Office will be:

  • Recording information on the campus's communications hotline, 459-INFO (831-459-4636).
  • Relaying information on a regular basis to KZSC Radio (88.1 FM) for broadcast.
  • Sharing information via the campus's Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Campus status update— Thursday, April 3

4:30 pm: Both campus entrances are open in both directions. Traffic diversions are no longer in place. Santa Cruz Metro service and campus shuttle service are back to normal. 

2:40 pm: Traffic diversions are in place around the Bay/High intersection, directing campus traffic to the west entrance. West entrance is open to vehicles entering and leaving campus. Vehicles may also leave via the main entrance.

2 pm: Access to campus at the main entrance is blocked by protesters in the street. Vehicles may leave via the main entrance.

West entrance is open to vehicles entering and leaving campus.

Traffic diversions are in place around the Bay/High intersection.

Santa Cruz Metro buses are continuing to reroute near the Bay/High intersection with no service onto campus.

Campus transit is operating the Upper Campus shuttle route and a modified Loop route traveling across campus between the West Remote lot and the Barn Theater.

1:35 pm: Both campus entrances are now closed. Marchers have assembled at the base of campus.

1:15 pm: Campus main entrance open. West entrance closed. Empire Grade open in both directions. Marchers are on Hagar Drive heading toward the base of campus which may impact traffic.

Noon: Traffic continues to flow freely in both directions at the main entrance. The west entrance is closed due to marchers in the road.

11:30 am: The main entrance to campus is open to vehicular traffic in both directions. Traffic remains backed up at the west entrance and on Empire Grade due to marchers in the road.

10:45 am: Traffic on Empire Grade is severely restricted due to marchers on the road. The west entrance is currently not accessible. 

9:30 am: Admissions campus tours will be conducted as originally scheduled today, although some delays may occur.

8:45 am: The west entrance continues to be open to vehicular traffic. Motorists will experience delays due to strike activity. Traffic is being diverted away from the main gate at Bay and High streets to the west entrance. Please use caution when driving onto campus because of numerous pedestrians.

7:30 am: The west entrance is open. Traffic is being diverted away from the main gate at Bay and High streets to the west entrance. Motorists can expect delays. Please use caution when driving onto campus because of numerous pedestrians.

6:50 am: Traffic is being diverted away from the main gate at Bay and High streets. Campus traffic is being directed to the west entrance which is open but motorists can expect delays. SCMTD Metro buses are rerouting near the Bay/High intersection with no service onto campus roadways.

Campus Transit is operating the Upper Campus route and a modified Loop route traveling across campus via McLaughlin Drive between the West Remote lot and the Barn Theater.

Bike Shuttle service is suspended.

Disability Van Service (DVS) is providing scheduled services. Clients with reservations should contact 459-3228 if they need to revise their trip plans.

6:15 am: There is currently strike activity occurring near the intersection of Hagar and Coolidge. Motorists are being stopped, given a flier, and it appears can then choose whether to pass through that area. There are also strikers gathering at the West Entrance. Similarly, drivers there are being given fliers, and can then decide whether to pass through that area. Police are also present at the West Entrance to enable access.

5 am: There is currently no strike activity to report on campus.

Wednesday, April 2

4 pm: Protesters have left the main entrance. Travel off campus remains open. Police are in the process of ending the detour from around Bay/High street intersection. West entrance continues to be open in both directions.

2 pm: The situation remains the same with the west entrance open to all traffic. The main entrance is open to traffic leaving campus but not to traffic entering due to picketers crossing the street. Most campus operations are open but with reduced staffing. Exceptions are the graduate division and OPERS which are closed. 

10 am: The west entrance remains open to vehicles. Traffic is being detoured around the Bay/High intersection and rerouted to Western Drive and Empire Grade. Pickets remain at the main entrance. 

8:05 am: The west entrance to campus is open. Police are directing campus traffic up Empire Grade to the west entrance. Picketers are present, please use extreme caution when driving through the area. Picketing is taking place at the main entrance.

7:50 am: Protest activity has moved from Coolidge at Hagar to the main entrance. Police are diverting traffic away from the main entrance.

7:15 am: Police are currently diverting vehicular traffic on Empire Grade at Western Drive. Please check back for updated status of traffic on Empire Grade.

7:05 am: Access to campus via the main entrance continues to be blocked at the intersection of Hagar and Coolidge.

6:15 am: Access to campus via the main entrance is currently blocked at the intersection of Hagar and Coolidge. Please use extreme caution. Strike activity continues at the west entrance. 

5:45 am: There are a dozen people picketing at the main entrance to campus and strike activity at the West Entrance as well. Please check back for updates. Thank you.

5 am: There is currently no strike activity on campus.

The university has been informed that strike activities may occur throughout the UC system on April 2-3.
