Award-winnning game designer and producer Robin Hunicke will present a talk titled “Expanding Games” on Tuesday, May 6, beginning at 12:30 p.m., at the UCSC Digital Arts Research Center.

Named one of Forbes’s “Top 12 Women in Gaming to Watch” in 2013, Hunicke is the co-founder and CEO of San Francisco’s independent game studio, Funomena.

Hunicke has a background in fine art, computer science, and applied game studies. She is best known for her role as executive producer of the award-winning Playstation Network title Journey.

An evangelist for diversity of thought and participation in game design and game culture, Hunicke was honored in March for her role as an ambassador for women at Microsoft’s annual Women in Gaming Awards.

Hunicke’s talk at UCSC will examine how games are expanding—reaching new audiences through new devices and technologies, and exploring deeper subjects through different modes of interactivity, as they empower new voices from around the world.

She will cover her history as a researcher, maker, and advocate of games as an expressive medium, including her graduate research on games and artificial intelligence, and her work on inclusive events such as the Global Game Jam and Experimental Gameplay Workshop.

Hunicke will also discuss her career as a professional game developer and her dedication to raising the number of women and minorities involved in the game design and development community.

“I truly believe that games have the potential to bring new ideas, new feelings, and new people into the arts and technology,” says Hunicke
