Diane Gifford-Gonzalez elected president of the Society for American Archaeology

Diane Gifford-Gonzalez, professor of anthropology at UC Santa Cruz, has been elected president of the Society for American Archaeology.

She will begin with a one-year term as the president-elect at the close of the society's annual business meeting April 23-27 in Austin, Texas. That will be followed by two years as president.

The Society for American Archaeology is the largest and most prestigious organization of professional archaeologists of the Americas in the world. It celebrates its 80th year in 2015, has more than 7,000 members, and publishes scholarly three journals. Gifford-Gonzalez said the society has become an active participant in national and international cultural heritage protection.

Gifford-Gonzalez is finishing a book, An Introduction to Zooarchaeology, which is scheduled to be published by Springer.

Last summer, she was elected to the Committee of Honor, International Conference of Archaeozoology.
