Safety Escort Program

To: UCSC Community

From: Nader Oweis, Chief of Police

I am pleased to announce that the UC Santa Cruz Police Department is implementing a nighttime Safety Escort Program for the Winter and Spring 2014 quarters. This pilot program has been made possible by the generosity of donors who have made contributions to the UCSC Parent Fund. Implementation of this service is intended to enhance campus community safety.

Beginning Tuesday, January 21, individuals needing an escort may call the Police Dispatch Center at 831-459-2100. The Safety Escort Program will operate Monday through Thursday, from 8:30pm to 12:15am. There may be exceptions for holidays. This service is provided at no charge.

The Safety Escort Program is staffed by Student Ambassadors who are employed by the Police Department; they have been trained, fingerprinted, and are in compliance with the California DMV Pull System to be eligible to drive. The Ambassadors will work in teams of two when providing Safety Escorts. The Ambassadors have been equipped with bright yellow and reflective safety vests, flashlights, and portable radios for communication with the Police Dispatch Center.

This program is not intended to replace existing transportation services such as the Metro Bus and Campus Shuttles or to discourage individuals from walking in groups. But it is intended to provide a safe and reliable means of transit from one location to another on the campus. The Safety Escort Program cannot provide services to or from off campus locations.

Intoxicated and/or disorderly students will not be transported, and food or alcohol is not allowed in the shuttle. The Ambassadors reserve the right to refuse to transport. Additionally, the Ambassadors may provide walking escorts in lieu of using a vehicle.
