Request Campus Input About Proposed UC Santa Cruz Smoke & Tobacco Free Policy

To: UCSC Community

From: Jean Marie Scott, Associate Vice Chancellor Risk and Safety Services; Saladin Sale, Director Risk Services

We write to request campus input on the proposed UC Santa Cruz Smoke & Tobacco Free Policy. The draft Policy and FAQ sheet may be found at:

The draft policy was developed in collaboration with the UC Santa Cruz Smoking Policy Steering Committee in response to a directive from University of California President Mark Yudof.  In his January, 2012 letter, President Yudof directed all UC campuses and medical centers to be smoke-free by January 1, 2014. Chancellor Blumenthal updated the campus on the policy development in his email of March 25, 2013 that may be found at:

The proposed UC Santa Cruz Policy affirms our commitment to creating a smoke and tobacco-free environment for the benefit of our community. The comment period will close on July 12, 2013. Comments should be sent to tobaccofree@ucsc.edu.

In addition to the opportunity to provide feedback online, the Steering Committee is hosting two open forum sessions for community members to provide verbal comments. These sessions will be held as follows:

June 10, Monday
7:00 - 8:00 PM
Namaste Lounge, College Nine

June 12, Wednesday
Noon - 1:00 PM
Kresge Town Hall

After the comment period closes, the Steering Committee will consider the input received and if appropriate, revise the Policy. The Policy will then be submitted to the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor for final review and approval.

Thank you for your support of the process for developing the UC Santa Cruz Smoke & Tobacco-Free Policy.
