Model UN competitor wins 'verbal acclamation' award

Kelsey Hill, a first-year history major affiliated with Kresge College, won a Verbal Acclamation Award at the UC Berkeley Model United Nations Conference held earlier this month in San Francisco.

Hill is a member of UCSC's Model UN team that competed in the conference February 28-March 3. Approximately 25 delegations from universities across the country took part.

She represented Cameroon on the Human Rights Council and spoke on women's rights in zones of conflict. The group passed two resolutions, one of which Hill sponsored. At the competition's conclusion, the chair awarded four "gavels" and two "verbal acclamations," an honorable mention. Gavels, given to outstanding delegates, were awarded to Tulane University, USC, and Harvard.

The UCSC team next hopes to compete in Model UN conferences in Chicago or New York.
