Remembering 9/11: UCSC trustee has turned 'tragedy into good'

In a story published in the Santa Cruz Sentinel on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, the family of UC Santa Cruz Foundation Trustee Stephen Bruce reflected on the events 10 years ago that claimed the life of Stephen's brother, Mark.

According to the article, Stephen Bruce — also a UCSC alumnus (Cowell '79) — has "turned tragedy into good by establishing a major scholarship in his brother's name." The Mark Bruce Fellowship for Math and Science is part of the California Teach program at UCSC. The program encourages science, math, and engineering students to teach science and math in secondary schools. Stephen Bruce has donated up to $50,000 each year for the past five years.

"Education to me is very important, and it was important to Mark," he said.
