In Memoriam—Stephen Hull

To: UCSC Community

From: Julian Fernald, director of Institutional Research

I am deeply saddened to share news of the unexpected death last week of Stephen W. Hull, a senior administrative analyst in the Office of Planning and Budget.

During his 17-year career at UC Santa Cruz, Steve played an important role in advancing the campus’ management and reporting of institutional data. Colleagues across campus relied on Steve for timely and accurate information about student enrollment, instructional activity, and campus demographics.

For the last eight years, Steve was an integral member of the Institutional Research team, helping to automate, streamline, and expand our reporting capacity. Previously, he played a key role in the development and implementation of the campus's innovative and highly regarded data warehouse.

Outside of work, Steve was engaged with the larger Santa Cruz community. He was a committed member of the Santa Cruz Indian Council, and he was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America, holding a variety of positions, chaperoning countless boys and young men on camping trips and outings, and serving as a mentor to many.

Passionate about surfing, the outdoors, and the ocean, Steve was well-known in surfing circles as "da Hulk." A local surfer since the '60’s, he was a regular around many of Santa Cruz's legendary surf spots. In his free time, Steve wrote essays and reflections on his life, many of them about surfing, family, and community. You can find some of them on his website at http://people.ucsc.edu/~shull/Index.htm.

Always good-natured, big-hearted, and thoughtful, Steve’s deepest commitment was to his family. A loving father, he is survived by his daughter Donna Orsini and his son Dylan Hull. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, in Cary Lodge at Monte Toyon Camp in Aptos. The address is 220 Cloister Lane, and parking will be available in the main lot. For the moment, please join me in remembering our colleague and friend. He will be dearly missed.
