Most of you are aware that the family lost in the plane crash of last Thursday evening was the son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren of our friend and colleague Professor Emeritus and former Dean Ed Houghton. Ed's son and his family, Dede, Luke and Ryan, were vibrant members of the Santa Cruz community and David was also a member of our UC Santa Cruz community as he was a previous campus firefighter as well as past UCSC student. I know you join me in shared sympathy for the Houghton family loss.
The campus also lost another individual last week in the tragic death of Stephen Hull of the Planning and Budget office. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Hull family.
If you find you need grief counseling or support, I would like to remind you of the campus resources that are available to you. Campus Counseling and Psychological Services can be reached at http://www2.ucsc.edu/counsel/ and the Employee Assistance Program can be found at http://shr.ucsc.edu/topics/benefits/eap/.
I encourage you to be sensitive to your coworkers who may be affected by these events in different ways. Please take time to check in with one another, take care of yourselves and help take care of each other.
